NORTHAMPTON — Firefighters quickly contained a basement fire in a Federal Street home early Thursday morning, preventing its spread to other parts of the structure and neighboring houses.

Northampton Fire Rescue responded to reports of a structure fire, with first arriving crews observing heavy smoke emanating from the eaves.

Firefighters located the fire in the basement and launched an aggressive interior attack.

While some crews battled the blaze, others ventilated the building and searched for signs of fire extension to upper floors.

Truck 1 was deployed to the roof as part of the operation.

The fire was successfully confined to the basement, though smoke damage affected the entire home.

One individual was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

Officials credit the rapid response and containment efforts by A Group members for saving the structure and averting potential damage to nearby residences.

Mutual aid partners assisted at the scene and provided city coverage during the incident.

The cause of the fire and extent of damages were not immediately available.
