1 min read

BROOKLINE — Officers from the Brookline Police Department peacefully resolved a standoff today after a man armed with knives barricaded himself inside his Sewall Avenue apartment.

The incident began at approximately 3:33 p.m. when a neighbor reported seeing an individual acting erratically while carrying two knives in the apartment building’s hallway.

The same person had reportedly displayed similar behavior in the days prior.

Upon arrival, officers observed the man with a knife before he retreated into his unit and refused to communicate.

Using a code provided by the building’s management, law enforcement gained entry with the assistance of a Special Response Team (SRT) robot.

After deploying a pepper ball, the man isolated himself in the bathroom.

Negotiators eventually established a dialogue, which led to the man surrendering the knives.

At 7:35 p.m., he exited the bathroom and was taken into custody without further incident.

The individual was transported to Beth Israel Hospital for evaluation.

Authorities have not yet determined whether he will face charges stemming from the encounter.
