WORCESTER — Worcester Police officers assigned to the Neighborhood Response Team arrested an Auburn man on June 20 after a chase that began with a traffic violation and ended with the discovery of a loaded firearm.
Murtadha Dheyab, 28, was observed riding a motorcycle with a broken headlight and no license plate at a high rate of speed along Lake Ave.
After stopping for ice cream at 195 Lake Ave, Dheyab fled on foot as officers approached him.
During the pursuit, officers noticed Dheyab reaching into his waistband and saw him drop what appeared to be a handgun.
The officers confirmed that the dropped item was a loaded Glock handgun.
Dheyab, who does not have a firearm license, was apprehended and charged with a series of offenses.
The charges against Dheyab include an outstanding arrest warrant, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and multiple firearm-related violations including carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of a large capacity firearm and feeding device.
Additional charges include disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, trespassing, and resisting arrest.
The Worcester Police Department is conducting further investigations into the incident.
