New Bedford man arrested with firearm, crack cocaine

NEW BEDFORD — A wanted man was apprehended by narcotics detectives and found in possession of a firearm and drugs, authorities reported.

During a routine patrol on the evening of June 12, Detectives Matthew Couture and Jonathan Miranda of the New Bedford Police Department noticed a vehicle driven by a man known to have an active arrest warrant.

The driver was identified as 40-year-old Jonathan Martinez of New Bedford.

Upon conducting a traffic stop, Martinez exited the vehicle and was promptly taken into custody.

A subsequent search led to the discovery of a loaded 9 mm pistol in the center console of his vehicle.

Martinez did not possess a license for the firearm.

Additionally, detectives found a bag containing crack cocaine in Martinez’s pocket.

Martinez now faces charges for carrying a loaded firearm, possession of crack cocaine, and the original warrant for his arrest.

The New Bedford Police Department urges anyone with information on criminal activities to report anonymously via their website or by calling 508-99-CRIME.
