BOSTON — Officers from the Boston Police Department’s B-3 Anti-Crime Unit arrested a man on firearm charges in Mattapan after a routine traffic stop early Tuesday morning.

At about 1 a.m., on June 11, police observed a vehicle without a front license plate and an obstructed rear plate near Harvard Street and Morton Street.

After initiating a traffic stop with emergency lights and sirens, officers approached the vehicle.

During the encounter, the right rear passenger, identified as Tahre Mims, 31, of Randolph, appeared to reach towards the floor before rolling down his window.

Officers then asked the occupants to exit the vehicle for further investigation.

Before being frisked, Mims admitted to having a firearm in his groin area.

Officers handcuffed him and recovered a Glock 42 with six rounds in the magazine.

The driver of the vehicle was released from the scene without charges.

Mims now faces charges for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

He is scheduled for arraignment in Dorchester District Court.
