1 min read

LEICESTER — A Leicester Police Department K9 assisted in the apprehension of a 25-year-old male suspect on Saturday evening following a motor vehicle crash in Spencer.

At about 7:30 p.m., the Leicester Police K9 unit responded to a request for mutual aid from the Spencer Police Department.

The suspect had fled the scene after the crash, causing property damage in the area.

K9 Cooney and his handler tracked the suspect for half a mile, navigating through residential backyards and wooded areas.

The scent-based search led them to the suspect, who was found hiding in thick brush.

Within an hour of the K9 unit’s arrival, the suspect was located and taken into custody by Spencer Police.

The successful track highlights the efficiency and skill of the Leicester Police Department’s K9 unit in locating individuals who have fled crime scenes.

Police stress the importance of personal responsibility, as attempting to evade law enforcement, especially with the aid of a police K9, is both misguided and futile.

The department’s K9 Cooney is praised for consistently achieving his objective in such operations.
