NEWPORT — Newport Downtown Development (NDD) is gearing up for a busy summer of bicycling activities, including rides, educational sessions, and special events. Two key events last week kicked off the season.
On May 15, a Bicycle-friendly Driver class was held from noon to 1 p.m. at the Work Commons. The class, co-hosted by the Newport City Police Department, discussed safe driving practices around bicyclists.
On Friday, Bike to Work Day was celebrated. Participants rode their bikes to work or for errands and enjoyed a free waffle breakfast at the Municipal Parklet from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. E-bikes and a bicycle mechanic were available at the event.
An Open Shop Night for basic bicycle maintenance is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., co-hosted by Memphremagog Trails and Eden Cider. Attendees can get help with bike maintenance and learn basic care skills.
Additional summer events include safe cycling classes for various groups, group rides, bike demos, and Bike in Movie Nights. All events are free and led by a certified cycling instructor.
