NEWPORT — A new documentary film titled “Just Getting By,” focusing on the challenges of food and housing insecurity among Vermonters, is set to be shown on May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Goodrich Memorial Library. Admission to the screening is free, courtesy of the sponsorship from the Orleans/Northeast Essex Building Bright Futures Council.

Directed by Bess O’Brien and shot by cinematographer Patrick Kennedy, the film offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of Vermont residents grappling with poverty. It portrays the day-to-day realities of working families, homeless individuals utilizing food shelves and soup kitchens, and those in temporary housing programs.

The film also highlights the efforts of New Americans, Native people engaging in innovative farming practices, and service providers aiding those in need within the community.

Following the screening, a question and answer session will be held with the director, featured individuals from the film, and audience members, facilitating a deeper discussion on these critical issues.
