KENNEBUNK — A fatal motor vehicle crash early this morning claimed the life of a Sanford man when his pickup truck struck a tree in Kennebunk.
At about 11:45 a.m., Kennebunk Police Department and emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Brown Street and Swan Street after receiving reports of a serious crash.
Freeman Hatch, 45, was discovered unresponsive at the wheel of his pickup truck, which had collided head-on with a tree.
Rescue attempts were made on the scene, but despite efforts to save him, Hatch was later pronounced dead at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.
According to preliminary investigations, Hatch was traveling northbound on Brown Street when his vehicle left the road, crossed Swan Street, and crashed into a tree.
Investigators are considering the possibility that Hatch suffered a medical event while driving, however, the exact cause has yet to be confirmed.
The accident prompted the closure of both Brown Street and Swan Street as law enforcement conducted their investigation.
The Kennebunk Police Department is leading the inquiry with support from an Accident Reconstruction Specialist from the York Police Department.
