SOUTH BERWICK — Firefighters were called to a scene on Rt. 91 late last night after a tractor-trailer went off the road near the bottom of a hill.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., South Berwick Fire Department’s Engine 1 and Car 1 were dispatched following reports of the accident.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the incident, but the vehicle, which was fully loaded, began leaking fuel upon impact.
The proximity of the truck to nearby electric and natural gas transmission lines raised concerns of potential hazards.
Crews worked alongside National Wrecker Service to assess the situation and concluded that immediate risks were under control.
Given the complex nature of the accident, authorities decided to secure the truck in place overnight to ensure the safety of the crew and the public.
Firefighters and other emergency personnel cleared the scene shortly before midnight, having successfully contained any immediate threats.
Motorists are advised to expect traffic delays this morning as removal operations for the tractor-trailer are set to begin.
Authorities are urging drivers to seek alternate routes if possible and to exercise caution when traveling through the affected area.
