1 min read

SCARBOROUGH — A black bear roaming the Pine Point neighborhood has prompted a public alert by the Scarborough Maine Police Department.

The bear, initially hunkered down during daylight hours, has begun to wander the area, leading the Maine Warden Service to attempt a safe capture and relocation.

Residents are advised to stay indoors with their pets and avoid the area to allow the Warden Service to carry out their work without interference.

The Police Department has been working closely with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife and is following their guidance on the situation.

While it is common for bears to seek refuge during the day, the presence of this bear has raised concerns for public safety.

The Police Department and the Warden Service had planned to monitor the bear until evening, anticipating it would leave on its own.

However, with the bear now on the move, efforts are focused on its safe removal.

Authorities remind the public that maintaining distance and avoiding surprises are crucial when in the vicinity of bears.

Most bears naturally avoid humans, but awareness and noise are key to preventing unexpected encounters.

The community is urged to pay attention to their surroundings and make their presence known, especially in areas with known bear activity.
