Kirby man arrested on attempted murder, assault charges

KIRBY — An 18-year-old from Kirby faces serious charges including attempted murder and sexual assault following an incident at a local residence early Tuesday morning, Vermont State Police reported.

Authorities said Charles W. Hunt Jr. was apprehended after troopers were called to a Kirby home at about 9:27 a.m. A family member alerted the police to the violence that had occurred.

The victim, a 53-year-old resident of Kirby whose name has not been released due to the nature of the crimes, was allegedly subjected to physical pain, an attempted murder, and an attempted sexual assault by Hunt, according to police.

Following the response to the scene, Hunt was taken into custody and processed at the St. Johnsbury Barracks.

Judge Michael R. Kainen has ordered Hunt be held without bail.

He is scheduled for arraignment at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, in the Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court, St. Johnsbury.

Details of the case remain limited pending the arraignment.
