NEWPORT — A fire erupted Tuesday evening at a property on Shattuck Hill, destroying a garage and an upstairs apartment, and causing damage to the main house, fire officials reported.
The Derby Line Fire Department was called to the scene at around 7:25 p.m. to find the garage and apartment building fully engulfed in flames.
The two-story building, which contained an unoccupied apartment above the garage, was fully ablaze, and the structure had already partially collapsed by the time firefighters arrived.
Firefighters executed an aggressive strategy to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to the main residence. However, the main house sustained some damage to its upper floors and attic due to fire and water.
The property of owner is listed as Doug Sherlaw.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation, but it is believed to have started in the garage area.
