READING — A Peabody man was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning after police found a heavily damaged vehicle on Haverhill Street.
Albert Salsgiver, 74, of Peabody, was taken into custody following a field sobriety test that led officers to believe he was operating the vehicle while intoxicated.
The Reading Police Department responded to the scene near 300 Haverhill St. at about 1:33 a.m., where they discovered a Jeep Liberty with significant front-end damage indicative of a collision.
Upon speaking with Salsgiver, who was identified as the driver, police conducted a preliminary investigation.
After the sobriety test, he was transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Salsgiver was held on $240 bail and appeared for his arraignment in Woburn District Court on Monday.
