NEWPORT — North Country Union High School showcased strong performances in both track and field and girls tennis this week, with the track team competing at their second meet of the season on Thursday and the tennis team starting their season with a decisive win on Tuesday.
At the BFA St. Albans track meet, the North Country girls triumphed, securing first place overall, while the boys team finished fourth. Standout athletes included Sabine Brueck, who won the 100m and 200m races, setting a personal record in the latter. Amelia Larsen took first in shot put, and Natalee Kneeland led the 1500m with a personal best, followed by teammate Mara Bowers in third place. The girls also won the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
In boys’ events, AJ Esposito earned a second-place finish in the 1500m, and the team claimed victory in the 4x400m relay. Notable performances also came from Vincent Mutter and Levi Brewer, who achieved top finishes in sprint events.
Turning to tennis, North Country girls celebrated a 6-1 victory over BFA St. Albans in their season opener. Singles wins were recorded by Cheska Adonis, Maya Auger, and Anisa Brasseur, while Heidi Cole and Kaitlyn Spomer, along with Lily Beauvais and Cassidy Burnett, secured wins in doubles.
The track and field teams are set to compete again at St Johnsbury on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., and the tennis team will host Middlebury on Monday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m.
