WOODSTOCK — A Windsor County Sheriff’s Department deputy was injured this morning when his firearm discharged accidentally during a routine training exercise.
The incident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. while deputies were conducting firearms qualification.
According to the initial investigation, a fastener from the deputy’s jacket became lodged in the holster.
This unforeseen obstruction caused the trigger to compress as the deputy holstered his duty weapon, resulting in an accidental discharge.
The injured deputy was promptly treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
The Sheriff’s Department announced that they will conduct a thorough after-action review of the incident with assistance from an outside agency to prevent future occurrences.
The review will evaluate all aspects of the incident, including equipment, protocols, and training procedures.
