OAKLAND — Local businesses have been targeted by scam calls from individuals claiming to represent the Oakland Fire Department, authorities said Monday.
The fraudulent callers have been asking businesses for details about their fire protection systems.
However, the Oakland Fire Department has confirmed that these calls are not being made by their personnel.
Officials emphasized that when the fire department needs to update site files or acquire information from businesses, an on-duty member of the department will make an in-person visit and speak directly with business representatives.
The fire department has advised business owners and employees to remain vigilant and not to disclose sensitive information over the phone to unsolicited callers.
Businesses receiving such calls are urged to report them immediately to the Oakland Police Department to help prevent potential scams and protect the community.
