BOSTON — A man was arrested on charges of assault and battery after a report of a person wielding a knife led police to the scene in Dorchester on Saturday evening.

Boston Police Department officers from District B-3 (Mattapan) responded to the call at about 5:22 p.m. near 56 Dunbar Avenue, where they encountered two individuals fleeing the area.

The pair informed the officers they were being pursued by a man with a knife.

According to the victims, they were playing basketball when the suspect, identified as Omar Stephenson, 37, of Dorchester, approached them asking to join the game.

The situation escalated when Stephenson became overly aggressive, leading the victims to ask him to leave.

Stephenson then reportedly put one of the victims in a headlock, released him, and subsequently brandished a knife, chasing the victims.

With a description of the suspect in hand, officers located Stephenson screaming at the basketball court.

Upon apprehension and a pat frisk, a 12-inch hunting knife was found sheathed in his waistband under his coat.

Stephenson was arrested and charged with assault by means of a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery.

He is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
