Sunderland teen seriously injured in crash

SUNDERLAND — A 17-year-old Sunderland resident was seriously injured late Wednesday night when their Subaru Forester struck a deer, hit a tree, and caught fire on North Road near Colbrook Road, authorities said.

Vermont State Police said they responded to the scene at 11:32 p.m. amid rain and fog, with wet road conditions.

The vehicle, which was traveling at an excessive speed according to the preliminary investigation, was engulfed in flames upon the troopers’ arrival.

The juvenile, whose name has not been released due to their age, was transported to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center with serious injuries.

The status of their seat belt use at the time of the crash is unknown.

The Arlington Fire/Rescue team assisted at the scene, and the roadway was closed for about 45 minutes as firefighters extinguished the flames.

The Subaru Forester, which was totaled and burned in the incident, was removed by Monarch Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Vermont State Police.
