Claremont Fire Department battles two structure fires

CLAREMONT — The Claremont Fire Department responded to two structure fires on March 21st and 22nd, successfully containing both blazes with assistance from multiple agencies.

At 9:18 PM on March 21st, firefighters arrived at 34 River Rd to find a detached garage fully involved.

The fire was called under control at 10:03 PM. Crews remained on scene for an extended period to fully extinguish any hot spots. The cause is still under investigation, but initial assessments suggest it was not suspicious. The structure is reported to be insured.

The following day, March 22nd, crews responded to a second structure fire at 28 High Street at 3:03 PM.

First arriving companies found an active fire on the backside second-floor porch. Personnel extended a handline and commenced extinguishment operations, containing the fire to the exterior stairs.

During the response, fire crews successfully extricated a handicapped occupant from the second floor to safety.

The Claremont Fire Department determined the cause to be improper disposal of smoking materials. No occupants were injured.

Ascutney Fire, Windsor Fire, Golden Cross Ambulance, and the Claremont Police Department provided scene assistance for both incidents. Unity Fire and Newport Fire provided station coverage.
