HOLYOKE — Police apprehended 35-year-old suspect Luis Vendrell, wanted on an assault to murder with a firearm warrant, after a foot chase on Feb. 1.
Detectives were conducting surveillance near the intersection of High and Maple Streets when they spotted Vendrell, who was also wanted on a separate firearms case.
As officers attempted to approach him at the corner of High and Essex Streets, Vendrell fled on foot up Essex Street.
A brief pursuit ensued, and detectives managed to detain Vendrell a short distance from High Street.
During the struggle, a firearm fell to the ground.
Vendrell was subsequently arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including possession of a Class B drug, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and assault and battery on a police officer.
Additional charges related to firearm possession were added due to Vendrell being out on bail for a prior violent drug crime and possessing a Polymer 80 (GhostGun), an unserialized weapon often referred to as a ‘ghost gun.’
Vendrell is currently facing a litany of charges as the investigation continues.
