FAIRHAVEN — A New Bedford man has been arrested on multiple charges, including carrying a firearm without a license, after police found him with suspicious items and a loaded handgun in a vehicle with stolen plates.
Carlos Brito, 55, of New Bedford, was taken into custody Friday morning after Fairhaven Police officers responded to reports of a suspicious person at the intersection of Green and Cedar streets around 9 a.m.
Brito, who was seen wearing rubber gloves and pantyhose over his head, was located in a parked Honda Accord.
The vehicle’s registration plates were later determined to be stolen.
A subsequent search by the officers uncovered a 9mm handgun under the driver’s seat and additional items including zip ties, duct tape, latex gloves, plastic bags, and a pillow.
The accused is facing charges of carrying a firearm without a license, receiving stolen property under $1,200, number plate violation to conceal the identity of the vehicle, possession of ammunition without an FID, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
Following his arrest, Brito was arraigned in New Bedford District Court where he was ordered held without bail.
A dangerousness hearing is scheduled for next week.
