Coventry woman arrested for grand larceny and unauthorized vehicle operation

NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department has reported the arrest of Sheila Canto, a 57-year-old resident of Coventry, on charges of grand larceny and operation without consent of owner.

The incident unfolded this morning, when Newport Police responded to a call on Middle Street regarding a stolen vehicle, a white Toyota Yaris, which had been taken while warming up outside.

The vehicle’s owner had declined Canto’s request for a ride before the theft occurred.

Later, at 12:18 p.m., an Orleans County Deputy located the stolen vehicle on Lower Village Road in Lowell, with Canto identified as the operator. She was arrested without incident and transferred to the Newport Police station for booking.

Following her arraignment in Orleans Superior Court, Canto was released with the stipulation that she have no contact with the victim.
