WHITINGHAM — Carl Butterfield, 54, of Whitingham, has been sentenced to serve 135 months in prison following his guilty plea to one count of possession of child pornography.

The sentencing was carried out by Chief U.S. District Judge Geoffrey W. Crawford in the United States District Court in Rutland, Vermont.

Post-incarceration, Butterfield will also undergo a 15-year term of supervised release.

The case, dating back to September 30, 2021, involved Butterfield possessing and dividing a video that depicted an adult male sexually assaulting a prepubescent female.

He then transmitted the segmented video files via the social media platform Kik.

At the time of this offense, Butterfield was on furlough with the State of Vermont, following a 2007 conviction for possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Judge Crawford’s decision to sentence Butterfield to a minimum of 10 years was influenced by his prior conviction for a similar offense.

Additionally, the sentence was enhanced due to Butterfield’s obstruction of justice, marked by his intentional destruction of an iPhone used to access CSAM, thereby preventing examination by his state probation officer.
