North Troy man arrested for theft of purse at Walmart, fraudulent use of debit cards

NEWPORT — Orleans County Sheriff Jennifer Harlow announced the arrest of a North Troy man following a theft and fraud incident at the Derby Walmart.

According to the sheriff’s department, Peter Ste. Marie, 39, was taken into custody on charges of petit larceny and false pretenses or tokens, both misdemeanors.

The incident occurred on Sept. 19, when Deputy Gonyaw was alerted to a male suspect stealing a purse at the Walmart located on Seymour Drive.

Further investigation revealed that debit cards from the stolen purse were used at two different stores within Orleans County, with transactions totaling $198.14.

Authorities identified Ste. Marie as the individual who committed the theft and used the debit cards for cash back.

Ste. Marie is scheduled to appear in Vermont Superior Court’s Orleans Criminal Division on Jan. 23, to face the charges.
