FAIRHAVEN — A police officer was shot Friday evening during a confrontation with an allegedly intoxicated man outside Bayside Lounge on Sconticut Neck Road.
The incident began around 5 p.m. when Fairhaven Police responded to reports of an intoxicated male attempting to drive away from the bar.
Witnesses indicated efforts were made to prevent the individual from driving.
According to police, a gun was brandished during the encounter, though it remains unclear if the weapon was produced by the suspect or another person at the scene.
The situation escalated, prompting backup from Acushnet and New Bedford Police Departments.
Authorities quickly established a perimeter around the area, closing off Sconticut Neck Road and designating Wood Middle School as a staging ground for emergency medical services.
By 5:30 p.m., news emerged that an officer had been shot.
An ambulance dispatched from Wood School arrived to transport the wounded officer to St. Luke’s Hospital.
The identity of the officer and details regarding their condition have not been released.
As of 6 p.m., reports from eyewitnesses suggested that the shooter had been shot and killed, though official confirmation from law enforcement was still pending.
