LYNN — Two men were arrested Saturday after a traffic stop led to the discovery of firearms and drugs, according to state police.
Trooper Brandon Chartier, part of the Troop A Community Action Team, was monitoring traffic on Western Avenue when he noticed a driver using a cellphone and initiated a stop of the gray Nissan Altima.
Chartier approached the vehicle, which had three occupants, and while speaking with them, he detected the odor of marijuana and observed the handle of a pistol in the coat pocket of passenger Dimitry Philippe, 20, of Malden.
With backup from Trooper Domenic Ramasci, both officers secured the firearm and proceeded to remove the occupants for further investigation.
Philippe, who is not licensed to carry firearms, resisted as Chartier attempted to retrieve the gun from his pocket.
A pat-frisk of another passenger, Eddie Rojas, 23, of Lynn, revealed another unlicensed firearm tucked into his waistband.
A search of the vehicle yielded approximately six ounces of a substance suspected to be marijuana.
Rojas and Philippe were arrested and transported to the Revere Barracks for booking, while the vehicle’s operator was released with a citation.
Rojas faces charges including illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a high-capacity feeding device, possession of ammunition without an FID card, possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, and conspiracy to violate drug law.
Philippe is charged with illegal possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resisting arrest, assault and battery on a police officer, possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute, and conspiracy to violate drug law.
Both men were scheduled for arraignment at Lynn District Court.
