NEWPORT –– Ivan Carmona, 32, of Springfield, Massachusetts, also known as “Flacco,” was sentenced to 108 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

The sentencing occurred in the United States District Court in Rutland earlier this week, after Carmona pled guilty to assaulting a federal agent and brandishing a firearm during the assault.

The incident dates back to November 17, 2021, when Carmona was sought by state and local authorities for multiple crimes and his evasion of law enforcement. During his flight, United States Border Patrol (USBP) agents from the Newport Station joined the pursuit due to Carmona’s proximity to the international border.

On November 18, 2021, USBP agents located Carmona and a companion walking along Bear Mountain Road near North Troy. When asked for identification, Carmona fled, leading to a foot pursuit by a USBP agent. During this pursuit, Carmona drew a loaded handgun and pointed it at the agent.

The pursuit and eventual apprehension of Carmona involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including USBP, ATF, Air & Marine Operations, the Orleans County Sheriff’s Department, Vermont State Police, Newport Police Department, and the Vermont Drug Task Force.
