EASTHAMPTON — A Southampton man was killed in a single-vehicle crash at a busy Easthampton intersection early this morning, authorities said.

The 21-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene after his car struck a guardrail and came to rest in a wooded area off Glendale Street, Pomeroy Meadow Road and West Street around 6:40 a.m.

According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the vehicle was headed east on Pomeroy Meadow Road when it failed to stop at the stop sign, crossed the intersection, and collided with the guardrail on the southeast corner.

The impact caused the vehicle to become briefly airborne before landing in a field.

Easthampton Police and Fire Departments were the first to respond, followed by units from the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), Crime Scene Services Section, and Detectives from the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.

The intersection was closed to traffic following the accident, with road closures and detours lifted at about 1:15 p.m.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, and the victim’s official cause of death will be established by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
