BRATTLEBORO — A structure fire at 46-48 Lexington Avenue late Saturday evening resulted in one fatality, with emergency crews battling the blaze into the early hours of Sunday.

Central Station and Station 2 were dispatched at 9:58 p.m. to the reported fire.

Engine 2 arrived on the scene at 10:02 p.m., where Captain Schmidt observed heavy flames engulfing the two-and-a-half-story wood frame structure.

Schmidt called for a second alarm at 10:03 p.m.

The firefighting effort faced additional hazards as crews encountered downed power lines and a risk to the adjacent property at 54 Lexington Ave.

However, they managed to protect the neighboring building and start an offensive on the original fire building.

Due to the perilous conditions and rapid spread of the fire, an interior attack was deemed impossible.

During the operation, one occupant of the house was found deceased on the second floor.

The blaze, whose cause is currently under investigation, was declared under control at 12:29 a.m.

The Brattleboro Fire and Police Departments, along with the Vermont State Police, are conducting the investigation.
