SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield man was arrested Wednesday afternoon with a significant amount of heroin, cocaine, crack-cocaine, and cash in the neighborhood of Federal and Worthington Streets, following complaints from residents about ongoing drug activity in the area.
Edwin Fontanez, 36, was taken into custody by the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit around 2:15 p.m. on the 900 block of Worthington Street.
Police detectives, responding to neighborhood concerns, had been conducting surveillance on Fontanez and observed him engaging in a drug transaction.
Upon his arrest, detectives discovered and confiscated a dozen bags of heroin and over 35 plastic caps containing powder and crack-cocaine.
Fontanez was also found to be wanted on two active warrants related to drug charges from Springfield and Holyoke.
Fontanez faces multiple charges including possession with the intent to distribute a Class A drug (heroin) and Class B drugs (cocaine and crack-cocaine).
The arrest warrants from Holyoke District Court include possession with the intent to distribute a Class B drug and possession of a Class B drug.
Additionally, a default warrant from Springfield District Court lists charges for distribution of a Class A drug and conspiracy to violate drug law.
