New Bedford stabbing investigation leads to illegal gun arrest

NEW BEDFORD –– An investigation into a stabbing incident on November 7 led to an unrelated arrest for illegal firearm possession, local police reported.

Patrol units were called to the intersection of Collette St. and Ashley Blvd. at about 9 p.m. in response to reports of a male victim who had been stabbed.

Officers located the adult male who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, is expected to recover but did not provide information to the authorities.

During the investigation at the scene, Officers Eric Boulay and Jack Cordeiro detained Victor Abraham Rodriguez Ortiz, 22, of New Bedford, as he attempted to leave the area.

Ortiz was found to be carrying a loaded Glock handgun.

He was arrested and charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license after being taken to police headquarters.

The New Bedford Police Department continues to investigate the stabbing and urges anyone with information to come forward.
