Gunshot incident reported in Newport, victim recovering

NEWPORT — The Vermont State Police say they are looking into the circumstances surrounding a shooting incident that transpired on Sunday afternoon on Farrar Road in Newport Town.

Troopers received a report of the incident at 3:34 p.m.

Upon arrival, Miranda Chaput, 38, of Newport was discovered at North Country Hospital, having been transported by a private vehicle for medical attention. Chaput endured a gunshot wound to a lower extremity.

Initially treated at NCH, Chaput was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Her injuries are not anticipated to be life-threatening.

Investigating officers are exploring all leads. Chaput has conveyed that the shooting resulted from an inadvertent discharge of a firearm.
