NEWPORT –– Thanks to golfers and sponsors coming together in support of the annual North Country Hospital fundraiser, another round of students will receive scholarship awards in the next round of application review. Last Sunday, 19 teams participated in the event held at Newport Country Club.

Three student teams joined in, and Alex Giroux led three NCU students to victory by placing first with their gross score – an easy round for Gage Micknack, Zach Abbott, and Alex Giroux. The lowest net-winning team was the foursome of Will Sisson, Dawn Kelley, Nancy Sisson, and Larry Sisson.

Austin Giroux’s name came up again on hitting the longest drive on hole #4, along with Sofia Dattili, on the M&T Bank team, making the longest drive for the ladies on hole #4. Closest to the pin on holes 2, 6, 13, and 17 were Greg Bronson, David Converse, Tim Bronson, and Nancy Sisson, respectively.

As the awards were presented, golfers and volunteers enjoyed a buffet lunch served by Miller’s Pub. Robert Hagerty won the 50/50 and immediately presented $100 of his winnings back to the NCH Scholarship Fund.

Each June at local high school graduation time, North Country Hospital awards $1,000 scholarships to students pursuing a degree in various healthcare fields of study, including nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, and dentistry. Each year provided these students stay within the healthcare field and accomplish at least a 3.0 GPA their scholarship is renewed. This results in about $40,000 benefitting 40 students each year, all coming from the hospital foundation’s fundraising efforts.
