Festival-goer’s death in Bethel ruled accidental overdose

BETHEL –– The Vermont State Police has disclosed the cause of death of a 35-year-old Boston resident, Ian Denhardt, who tragically lost his life during the Firefly Festival held in Bethel earlier this month.

An autopsy report from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington revealed that Denhardt died from acute MDA intoxication. The manner of death was ruled accidental.

The incident transpired on July 7, 2023, with the first responders receiving a distress call at approximately 11:26 p.m.

The Bethel Fire Department and White River Valley Ambulance swiftly arrived at the scene on 307 Christian Hill Rd., only to pronounce Denhardt deceased a short while later.

While the initial phases of the investigation did not hint at anything suspicious regarding the nature of Denhardt’s death, toxicology tests were initiated to ensure thoroughness.

The results confirmed the initial speculation: a fatal overdose.

Ian Denhardt’s sudden death has undeniably cast a shadow over the Firefly Festival. As the investigation remains ongoing, authorities urge the public to share any relevant information that might aid in providing a comprehensive understanding of the events that night.
