NEWPORT CENTER — A Vermont State Police officer is seeking information on a driver who fled from a traffic stop at excessively high speeds on VT RT 100 in Newport Center yesterday.

The incident occurred at around 6:47 p.m. when a trooper observed a Volkswagen sedan traveling south at 113 mph, more than twice the posted speed limit of 50 mph. The driver continued speeding, negligently overtaking another southbound car at the crest of a hill, despite the initiated traffic stop.

The vehicle in question is believed to be a newer model, possibly dark grey, Volkswagen Jetta. The driver is described as a white male, approximately in his 20s. A photo of the car, including a license plate, was taken but is distorted due to the vehicle’s speed.

Vermont State Police are asking anyone who might recognize the car or driver to contact Sgt. Joshua Mikkola at 802-334-8881.

The driver, who is yet to be identified, is accused of excessive speed, negligent operation, and attempting to elude law enforcement. The case remains under investigation.
