NEWPORT — The Newport City Council held a meeting at the Gateway Center on Monday night to discuss various topics, including the appointment of Karen Geraghty as interim city manager and the upcoming mayoral election.
During the meeting, Geraghty emphasized the importance of understanding the role of the council and the statutes and regulations of the mayor’s position. She said that the city manager’s role is to work with both the council, who set the policy, and the employees who execute the services for the public good in the community.
The meeting also included discussions about the upcoming mayoral election, where three candidates have submitted their names for the August 1 election.
Carl P. King submitted his name, as did Roderick J. Owens. Both ran in the last election. Linda Joy Sullivan was the third candidate to add her name to the list. The candidates will be vying for a two-year term, with the winner filling approximately 19 months of the term.
The next council meeting will be held on July 10, and starts at 6:30 p.m. The location of this meeting has yet to be announced, and may take place again at the Gateway Center, given the number of people who have been attending.
