These charges stem from a May 18 collision that resulted in the death of 52-year-old Shayne Bessette, also a resident of Lowell.

Authorities report that both men were traveling east on Hazen Notch Road when Pierce, driving a 2006 Toyota Tundra, attempted to pass Bessette’s 2003 Ford Ranger on a corner of the roadway.

The vehicles collided near the center of the road, causing the Ford Ranger to lose control and roll over in the shoulder of the roadway.

Bessette was ejected from his vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.

Pierce, who maintained control of his vehicle, continued traveling east without stopping or reporting his involvement in the fatal crash to law enforcement.

After processing at the Derby Barracks, Pierce was released on a $10,000 unsecured appearance bond.

He is scheduled to appear in Orleans County Superior Court, Criminal Division, on June 23, 2023, at 12:30 p.m.
