Vandalism at Sheldon Elementary School under investigation as possible hate crime

SHELDON — Vermont State Police are investigating a vandalism incident involving racist and homophobic slurs at Sheldon Elementary School that may qualify as a hate crime.

The case will be reported to the Attorney General’s Office under the Bias Incident Reporting System.

On the morning of June 19, troopers were alerted to the vandalism on the school’s playground, which included the offensive slurs.

A review of surveillance footage revealed a small, silver, four-door sedan entering the school grounds at approximately 12:11 a.m.

Three individuals were seen exiting the vehicle, running toward the playground, and returning to the car around 12:24 a.m.

Due to the quality of the surveillance, detailed descriptions of the individuals involved are currently unavailable.
