Fatal crash in Newark, Charleston resident hospitalized

NEWARK — A two-vehicle crash on Island Pond Road resulted in one fatality and several severe injuries late Thursday evening.

At approximately 8:40 p.m., the Vermont State Police responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash with entrapment near the intersection of Island Pond Road and River Lane.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Toyota Tacoma was traveling north when it crossed the center line and began traveling in the southbound lane, striking a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado head-on.

The operator of the Toyota Tacoma, whose identity will be released pending notification to next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tacoma’s front-seat passenger was initially transported to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital but was later transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The back-seat passenger was transported to North Country Hospital with serious injuries, but they are not currently believed to be life-threatening.

The operator of the Chevrolet Silverado, identified as Rene Morse, 32, of Charleston, was also transported to North Country Hospital with serious injuries.

Police say they do not believe her injuries to be life-threatening at this time.
