WILTON — The Wilton Fire Department received a report of a building fire at 51 Island Street yesterday.

The first unit arrived on the scene within three minutes to find heavy flames throughout the first floor of one side of the two-family residence.

The fire was quickly upgraded to a working fire, bringing additional resources to the scene.

The occupants of the building were home at the time and were able to safely evacuate thanks to working smoke detectors.

Unfortunately, one family pet was lost in the fire.

Assistance was provided by the Wilton Police, Wilton Ambulance, and multiple fire departments from the surrounding towns.

Amherst and Brookline Fire Departments provided station coverage for the duration of the incident.

The fire was put under control at 10:47 p.m.

The home suffered significant damage to one unit and smoke damage to the other.

The cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature, but the investigation is ongoing.

Island Street was closed with the assistance of Wilton DPW and crews cleared the scene at approximately 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.
