SOUTH BURLINGTON — A South Burlington man will likely face murder charges following an incident that occurred at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans earlier this year.

An altercation was reported between two inmates, which resulted in Jeffrey Hall being seriously injured.

Mbyayenge Mafuta, 21, of South Burlington, who was the other inmate involved, was originally issued a citation for attempted murder and is in custody on unrelated charges.

The incident was first reported on January 5, 2023, when the Vermont State Police began their investigation.

The Department of Corrections had notified the police that an altercation had occurred in a cell between Hall and Mafuta.

Hall was taken to the hospital in critical condition, while Mafuta remained uninjured.

Hall died at UVM hospital on March 10.

The case was then reviewed by the Franklin County State’s Attorney’s Office, which requested that a citation be issued to Mafuta

The charges against Mafuta are likely to be amended, police say.
