NEWPORT — A winter weather advisory has been issued for several cities in northern New York and Vermont.
The advisory indicates that a snowstorm is expected to hit the area from 9 p.m. on Friday to 4 p.m. on Saturday, bringing with it total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches.
The affected regions include Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, the northern Champlain Valley, and the St. Lawrence Valley in northern New York.
The advisory warns that travel could be difficult during this time, especially on Friday night and early Saturday morning, when snowfall rates may approach 1 inch per hour.
As such, drivers are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling.
Additionally, the advisory recommends that those who need to travel should allow extra time to reach their destination.
Tonight
There is a chance of light snow before 9 p.m., followed by a slight chance of snow showers between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. It will be cloudy, then gradually become partly cloudy, with a low around 14. The northwest wind will be blowing at 7 to 14 mph. There is a 40 percent chance of precipitation, and new snow accumulation of less than a half inch is possible.
Friday
It will be mostly sunny, with a high near 31, and a light and variable wind.
Friday Night
Snow, mainly after 11pm, is expected. The snow could be heavy at times, with a low temperature around 25. The southeast wind will be blowing at 3 to 8 mph. There is a 90 percent chance of precipitation, and new snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches is possible.
Saturday
There will be snow before 1 p.m., followed by snow showers likely, mainly between 1pm and 3pm. The snow could be heavy at times, with a high near 32. The east wind will be blowing at 5 to 9 mph. There is a 90 percent chance of precipitation, and new snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches is possible.
Saturday Night
There is a 40 percent chance of snow. It will be cloudy, with a low around 24. The east wind will be around 6 mph, becoming light and variable after midnight.
Sunday
It will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. The light west wind will become northwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

It will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. The northwest wind will be blowing at 11 to 14 mph.
