Man arrested after causing disturbance, assaulting Montpelier police officer

MONTPELIER — A 28-year-old man was arrested Montpelier on Tuesday.

Authorities were notified of an altercation that occurred within a convenience store involving a person in a mental health crisis.

The incident occurred on Berlin and State Street at around 11:30 a.m.

Police say the involved party was reported to have exhibited violent and tumultuous behavior, damaged property within the store, and assaulted a store employee before fleeing.

Police located the man in the area of State and Elm Streets where they assaulted a passerby and continued to exhibit violent and tumultuous behavior.

When police went to intercede, the suspect assaulted them.

Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies and a Court Security Officer at the nearby courthouse assisted in taking them into custody.

The suspect was evaluated by the Montpelier Ambulance Service and Washington County Mental Health Services before being transported to the hospital for further mental health evaluation.

Police say that probable cause that the man from Montpelier committed simple assault, aggravated disorderly conduct, unlawful mischief, and simple assault on a police officer.

Police have not identified the suspect at this time.
