NEWPORT — Independence Day celebrations are kicking off in Newport and Derby on Monday.
The fireworks in Newport will start at 9:30 p.m. over the South Bay, and be set off from the Veterans’ Memorial Long Bridge.
The city is reminding visitors that boats are not permitted in the bay at Gardner Park or near the South Bay railroad bridge during the show.
This year’s 4th of July celebrations will coincide with the Newport Summer Stroll series.
Stroll along the water in Gardner Park, with live music, art by Bread and Puppet, local artist vendors, and food trucks, starting at 5:00 p.m.
Evansville Transit Authority will perform from 6 to 9 p.m. on the waterfront at Gardner Park.
In Derby, the Fourth of July Parade will start at 10:00 a.m. led by Grand Marshall Gary LeBaron.
This year’s theme is “Local Treasures.”
The parade begins at the Elks Club on Route 5, and visitors are encouraged to arrive by 9:00 a.m.
Activities on the junior high green, including rides, games, vendors, food trucks, pony rides, face painting, and music, are set to start at 9:00 a.m. as well.
At 12:30 p.m. there will be the Newport Rotary ping pong ball drop fly-over behind the junior high.
