NEWPORT — A 59-year-old man from Derby was arrested for DUI following an incident in Newport yesterday.

Police say they initiated a traffic stop on Railroad Square at around 7:10 p.m.

According to the report, police had been alerted that the vehicle struck a building in Newport and left the scene around 20 minutes prior to the traffic stop.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Richard Sanville.

Sanville displayed multiple signs of impairment, police say, and following an investigation was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI.

Officers with the Newport Police department responded to assist.

It was later learned that the building was not struck, but rather a concrete pillar on the property.
