Police: Missing St. Johnsbury man presumed deceased, search concluded for today

ST. JOHNSBURY — The search for a missing St. Johnsbury man continued today, but police say he is presumed deceased.

Search efforts for Richard C. Gammell Sr. resumed Monday in and around the Passumpsic River.

Police believe he went into the water on Sunday morning in the vicinity of 1400 River Road in St. Johnsbury.

The Vermont State Police SCUBA team searched under the river ice today, but efforts did not locate Gammell.

At around 4:30 p.m. today police issued a statement saying he is presumed deceased, and the search is focused as a recovery operation at this point.

Crews concluded their work for the day at about 3 p.m. and say they will monitor the river and weather conditions to determine when to resume.

The incident is not considered suspicious, and police are asking anyone who sees anything or has information that may assist in the recovery, to call 802-748-3111.

Gammell is 84-years-old.
