SPRINGFIELD — An inmate from Coventry has died at the Southern State Correction Center in Springfield this morning.

Authorities were notified that 73-year-old Raymond Gadreault was found dead at the facility at around 6:45 a.m.

Police say he was housed alone in his cell and had a medical history.

During routine rounds, correctional center staff noticed Gadreault was experiencing a medical issue and called for medical staff and rescue to respond.

Resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced deceased.

The incident is not considered suspicious, police say, and it appears that Gadreault died of natural or medical causes.

Gadreault was captured in Virginia back in August of 2021 after he cut off his tracking bracelet and took off while on supervised release by Vermont Probation and Parole.

He was on home detention status as pre-trial conditions of release for a domestic assault charge.
