Police: Springfield man broke into home, assaulted resident with a shovel

SPRINGFIELD — A 21-year-old man is facing multiple charges following an incident in Springfield yesterday.

Authorities say they were notified of a citizen dispute call on Valley Street at around 11:40 p.m.

The caller stated that Johnathan Clark, of Springfield, forcefully entered a home on Valley Street.

Clark allegedly smashed out a window at the residence and entered an occupied dwelling, where he proceeded to assault Todd Amell, 53, of Springfield, with a metal shovel.

Clark fled the scene after the incident.

Police say he was later found walking down Dewey Street in Springfield and apprehended.

He was transported to Springfield Police Department for processing.

He was lodged at Southern State Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on February 22 to answer the charges of burglary, aggravated assault, and unlawful mischief.
