SHELDON — A rollover crash in Franklin County on Christmas left one dead and two injured.

The single-vehicle crash took place on Cook Road in Sheldon at around 4:45 p.m.

The vehicle ended up in a brook where a 19-month-old needed to be extracted from the vehicle.

The driver, identified as Meagan Staples, of Burlington, and passenger Evan Whalon, 20, of Highgate, were heading north when their vehicle came down a moderate hill around a sharp curve.

The road was extremely icy at the time, and the vehicle left the road just prior to the culvert, went down an embankment, and landed upside down in the water.

Both Staples and Whalon were able to get out of the vehicle, but the child in the backseat was still in the car seat and submerged in the water.

Police say a neighbor was able to run down and cut the child out of the seat.

Staples and Whalon were transported to Northwestern Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, while the child ended up being transported to UVM Medical Center.

Police have said on Sunday that the baby died as a result of injuries while in the Surgical ICU at UVMMC.
